In the spring of 1934, on the coast between La Spezia and Genoa, Marconi went further in its instrumental navigation studies. |
On the 300 ft promontory overlooking the fishing village of Sestri Levante, he setup a microwave radio beacon, working on the wavelength of 60 cm. |
On board the Elettra, he screened the bridge with canvas in order to simulate dense fog and navigated “blind” between the two buoys he had placed at the narrow mouth of the harbour. |
Promontory was the Peninsula (or “Island”) of Sestri Levante and radio beacon was installed on the top of a XIIIth century sighting tower that since then was named “Marconi Tower” as well the Tigullio Gulf was renamed in “Marconi Gulf”. |

Radio Amateurs of Sestri Levante, gathered in this Association, keep on preserving from time and men injuries this historical site, from which they continue to irradiate the same electromagnetic waves at that time using IY1TTM marconian station callsign. |
